Obverse description The face is printed in purple and lilac tones, dominated by a large oval blank vignette at left, framed by fine guilloche underprint extending across the entire field. The bank's heraldic arms — supported by a unicorn and a lion with the motto FIRM on the central escutcheon — appear at the lower centre. The denomination TWENTY POUNDS STERLING is rendered in bold intaglio lettering at centre, with the date Edinburgh, 19th March, 1969 and two facsimile signatures of General Managers below, and the serial number repeated at upper right and lower left.
