Clydesdale Bank is one of only three Scottish banks retaining the right to issue their own banknotes under the Currency and Bank Notes Act 1954 — a right that generates ongoing political friction, since Scottish notes have no legal tender status even in Scotland, relying entirely on public acceptance and equivalent backing held at the Bank of England. The 2005 series update for this denomination carried David Thorburn's signature as Chief Executive, a position he held from 2004 to 2008 during the bank's ownership under National Australia Group.
Clydesdale notes of this period are notoriously underrepresented in collector holdings relative to their print runs — heavily circulated in commercial transactions, rarely set aside.
