Obverse description The central vignette presents two classical allegorical female figures flanking the Bank of Scotland coat of arms, set against a fine guilloche underprint in blue and gold. Red diamond-shaped panels bearing the word 'TWENTY' occupy the upper corners, with a vertical left-margin panel enclosing armorial medallions; the denomination '£20' appears in bold letterpress at lower left and right. The Bank seal is rendered in blue intaglio at centre, above the promise-to-pay text and two manuscript signature lines.
Obverse lettering Bank of Scotland The Governor & Company of the Bank of Scotland Promise to pay here to the Bearer on Demand Twenty Pounds Sterling By Order of the Court of Directors Constituted by Act of Parliament 1695 EDINBURGH £20 TWENTY
Reverse description The reverse is unprinted, presenting plain paper stock across which a repeating watermark pattern of thistle motifs is visible in three vertical columns, consistent with the security paper employed for Scottish banknotes of this period.
