Reverse description The large numeral '20' dominates the central field in bold relief, serving as the principal denominational statement. The word NOTGELD is arranged in spaced capital letters along the upper arc of the coin, curving from the lower left to the upper right around the inner border. The denomination inscription PFENNIG appears in smaller spaced capital letters along the lower arc. The entire design is framed by a raised beaded border, and the plain field gives the reverse a stark, utilitarian appearance consistent with emergency coinage of the Weimar-era period.

Additional information

Zwiesel's 1920 notgeld issue belongs to the first wave of municipal emergency coinage that flooded Germany as the postwar monetary system buckled under reparations obligations and raw material shortages. Zinc was the practical choice — copper and nickel were still strategically restricted in the immediate aftermath of Versailles. Zwiesel itself, a small Bavarian Forest glassmaking town, had neither the industrial clout nor the population to absorb coin shortages quietly, hence the municipal issuance.

Funck 632.23 is among the more precisely documented of the Zwiesel types, cross-referenced in Menzel's corpus as 35512.24.
