Comments

Helgoland's notgeld issues are among the more geographically peculiar of the entire German emergency money period. The island had been British territory until 1890, when it was ceded to Germany in exchange for Zanzibar and other East African concessions — a trade that drew considerable contemporary mockery in the British press. By 1919, the Spar- und Leihkasse was issuing small-denomination scrip to compensate for the chronic coin shortage affecting even this remote North Sea community.

Köbner in Altona handled a significant volume of northern German notgeld printing during this period. Jacobs and Hanje signed as local authorities of the savings and loan cooperative, not as municipal officials.
