Additional information

Gleiwitz (now Gliwice, Poland) was a major industrial center in Upper Silesia, and the Stahlröhrenwerke — a steel tube manufacturing complex — was among its significant employers. This token was issued specifically for the Schlafhaus, the company's worker dormitory, restricting its use to on-site purchases. Such captive-currency arrangements were common in heavy industry before the First World War, binding workers economically to company-controlled canteens and lodgings.

Zinc was the practical choice for low-denomination works tokens — cheap, easily struck, and deliberately unsuitable for passing beyond the facility gates.
