| Obverse description | Dark brown letterpress print on salmon-tinted paper with an irregularly cut border. The upper portion carries the issuing authority title in large Gothic blackletter script flanked by the denomination numeral '20' on each side, with 'Gutschein über 20 Pfennig' set centrally. Kempen am Rhein — now simply Kempen, in the Lower Rhine region of North Rhine-Westphalia — issued this small-denomination Notgeld during the acute coin shortage that persisted in Germany well into the early 1920s. The Weimar government's inability to maintain adequate fractional coinage in circulation forced hundreds of municipalities to print their own emergency paper, and Stadtgemeinde Kempen was among the thousands that did so. The watermark security feature is worth noting at this denomination — many comparable municipal issues dispensed with it entirely.
