| Obverse description | The upper portion carries a central oval vignette enclosed within a wreath, bearing the municipal arms of Schmiedefeld with a rooster perched on a rock, inscribed 'Gemeinde Schmiedefeld' around the border; the vignette is flanked on both sides by detailed illustrations of glassware, laboratory equipment, syringes, and thermometers, referencing the town's glass industry. A bold blackletter title band reads 'Notgeld der Gemeinde Schmiedefeld' with the subtitle 'Glasindustrie- u. Lustkurort 720 m.ü.d.M.' Below, the denomination 'Zwanzig Pfennig' appears in decorative script at lower left and lower right, with a validity clause and a manuscript signature above the printed text 'Gemeindevorstand.' |

Schmiedefeld am Rennsteig is a small village in the Thuringian Forest, and like hundreds of German municipalities during the acute coin shortage of 1917–1921, it resorted to printing its own Kleingeldersatz — small-change substitutes — to keep local commerce moving. Graphische Werkstätten G.m.b.H. in Ilmenau, a regional printer active throughout the Notgeld period, handled a substantial volume of these municipal commissions across Thuringia.
The DeNG reference places this within the second series for Schmiedefeld, a detail that implies at least one earlier issue preceded it.
