Comments

Lübeck occupied an unusual constitutional position in Weimar Germany — one of only a handful of territories retaining the status of a Free State, a remnant of its Hanseatic autonomy. The Stadtkasse, the municipal treasury rather than a bank, issued this emergency note during the acute small-change shortage that gripped Germany in 1921, when inflation had made hoarding coins economically rational and the Reichsbank could not keep low denominations in circulation.

Gebrüder Borchers was a local Lübeck printer, which meant production, authorization, and distribution all happened within the same city — an unusually self-contained arrangement even by Notgeld standards.
