Merseburg's 1921 Notgeld issues were part of the vast wave of municipal emergency currency produced across Germany as coin shortages and post-war inflation made small-denomination Reichsmark coinage effectively unavailable. Gebrüder Parcus of Munich — a respected commercial printer with a substantial Notgeld client list — produced this piece to a finish well above what the economics of small-change replacement strictly required.
A. Wegner's design credit is worth noting: Parcus regularly commissioned named artists for municipal clients, which pushed Merseburg's scrip into the collectible tier almost immediately upon issue.
