Nördlingen's municipal magistrate issued this Notgeld series in 1918 as the wartime metal shortage made small-denomination coinage functionally unavailable across Germany. Municipal authorities were authorized to fill that gap, and hundreds of towns did exactly that — but Nördlingen's notes are among the more sought-after of the Bavarian municipal issues, largely because the printing was handled locally with enough care to include a watermarked paper stock, an unusual commitment for emergency scrip of this value.
The watermark is the detail worth examining. Most 1918 Kleingeldscheine skipped it entirely.
