The 20 Pesos Uruguayos series was introduced following the 1993 redenomination that replaced the Nuevo Peso at a rate of 1,000 to 1 — itself a redenomination of the original Peso. Uruguay had passed through catastrophic inflation in the 1980s, and the new currency family was designed partly to restore public confidence in the banking system after the 1982 financial crisis wiped out savings across the country.
Thomas De La Rue's output of just over twelve million notes for a multi-year run is a relatively modest print order, suggesting the 20 UYU denomination saw limited demand in daily transactions as inflation, though reduced, continued eroding the lower end of the range.
