The Banco Comercial de Santa Fé was one of several provincial Argentine banks that emerged in the 1860s under a loose federal banking framework that allowed individual provinces to charter their own note-issuing institutions. Santa Fé's commercial economy at this period was still heavily tied to livestock and early agricultural settlement — the province would not see its great wheat boom until the following decade, when immigrant colonies began transforming the Pampas.
Denominated in pesos plata boliviana, this note reflects the persistent use of Bolivian silver coinage as a de facto standard across the interior provinces, where Spanish colonial monetary habits outlasted independence by generations. The ABNC plate work is typically fine for the period.
