Mexican pattern coinage of the late 1970s was produced partly in response to ongoing studies into replacing silver with base metals across higher denominations — a process that had been accelerating since the 1970 removal of silver from circulating issues. This particular piece was part of a series of brass patterns exploring both design candidates and alloy suitability for potential circulation coinage. The ball player motif draws on pre-Columbian Mesoamerican ullamaliztli, the ritual sport played across cultures from the Olmec period forward.
It never entered circulation. Brass was ultimately passed over for this denomination.
