The Banco Nacional del Paraguay was established in 1885 with mixed Paraguayan government and private capital — a deliberate reconstruction measure following the catastrophic losses of the War of the Triple Alliance, which had ended in 1870 and left the country with a collapsed male population and no functioning monetary infrastructure. This note is among the earliest issues of that institution.
ABNC produced the plates in New York; the "Pesos Fuertes" denomination reflects the aspiration toward a hard-currency standard that Paraguayan fiscal reality made difficult to sustain. The bank lost its charter within a decade.
