Obverse description The Mexican national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a golden eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus growing from a rocky islet, grasping and devouring a serpent in its beak and talons. The eagle is shown in left profile with wings slightly raised, rendered in fine detail against a mirror-like proof field. Flanking the cactus are branches of oak and laurel tied at the base. The national legend ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS arcs along the upper periphery in raised Latin characters.
