The Moncada Barracks attack of July 26, 1953 — Fidel Castro's failed attempt to spark an uprising against Batista with roughly 160 fighters — became the foundational myth of the Cuban Revolution despite ending in immediate military defeat and the capture or execution of most participants. The date gave its name to the 26th of July Movement. Cuba issued commemorative coinage marking this anniversary with some regularity, and the 1993 pieces appeared during the depths of the "Special Period," the severe economic contraction that followed Soviet collapse.
