The 1980–1984 20 Peso series arrived as Mexico was careening toward its catastrophic 1982 debt crisis, when falling oil revenues and a collapsing peso forced the government to suspend foreign debt payments in August of that year. Coins of this denomination circulated hard through those years and were effectively rendered obsolete by inflation within a decade, absorbed into the 1993 redenomination that stripped three zeros from the currency.
