The undated 20p scandal of 2008 overshadows this issue in collector memory, but the silver proof series running through the early 2000s documents the fourth definitive portrait of Elizabeth II — the Maklouf effigy, commissioned in 1985 — in its final years of circulation use before the fifth portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley replaced it on circulating coinage in 1998. These proofs thus lag the circulating series by a decade, preserving a portrait already retired from everyday use.
