The 20 pence denomination was introduced in 1982 to reduce reliance on the 10p and ease pressure on the 50p in everyday transactions — a pragmatic response to inflation eroding the purchasing power of lower denominations. Gold proof versions were issued exclusively for annual proof sets rather than any standalone commemorative purpose, meaning surviving examples almost always retain their original packaging and have never approached a till.
The Maklouf fourth portrait, used across this date range, was phased out in 2008 when Jody Clark's fifth effigy entered circulation.
