The Isle of Man has historically used its political autonomy as a Crown Dependency to issue distinctive coinage independent of Royal Mint production schedules, frequently updating its portrait series ahead of the United Kingdom itself. The fourth definitive portrait of Elizabeth II, sculpted by Ian Rank-Broadley, was adopted by the Isle of Man in 1998 — the same year it entered general circulation in Britain.
