Obverse description Right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II wearing the George IV State Diadem, as designed by Raphael David Maklouf — this being the third definitive portrait used on British coinage. The Queen is shown draped, with the legend encircling the bust within the heptagonal field. The initials 'RDM' appear on the truncation of the portrait.

Reverse description A crowned Tudor rose rendered in high relief occupies the centre of the field, with a smaller inner rose superimposed upon the larger outer rose, symbolising the union of the Houses of York and Lancaster. The date is divided on either side of the rose, flanking the crown above. The designer's initials 'WG' appear within the rose stem foliage to the left. The denomination 'TWENTY PENCE' arcs around the upper portion of the coin, while the numeral '20' appears in large raised figures at the base of the design.
