Macao's lunar series coins are struck under contract rather than at any facility on the peninsula itself — the AMCM has no mint of its own, and production is typically handled by external mints operating under license. The Horse issue falls within a second cycle of the twelve-year lunar sequence that Macao has maintained since the 1980s, meaning a Horse coin had already been issued in 2002 and 1990 before this one.
KM# 153 is the base silver issue; a gold parallel was struck in the same year at significantly lower mintage.
