The Bank of China has issued banknotes in Macau since 1995, one of three note-issuing banks permitted under the territory's currency arrangement — an unusual tripartite system that survived the 1999 handover intact and remains in place today. Each institution issues its own designs across the same denominations, meaning this 20 pataca note from 2020 circulates alongside functionally identical denominations from Banco Nacional Ultramarino and the Monetary Authority of Macao itself.
Cotton substrate and a basic watermark put this squarely at the lower end of the security specification for the series — appropriate for a workhorse denomination unlikely to attract serious counterfeiting attention.
