Banco da China's entry into Macau's banknote market was itself a political event. Prior to 1995, the Banco Nacional Ultramarino held a monopoly on issuance in the territory; Beijing successfully pressured Lisbon into granting Banco da China co-issuing rights four years before the handover, a deliberate move to establish financial presence ahead of the 1999 transfer of sovereignty to China.
The 1999 date places this note in the transitional series issued immediately around the handover, which occurred on 20 December of that year. Notes from this period circulated alongside BNU issues without preference — Macau retained a dual-issuer system under the new administration.
