| Obverse description | Facing helmeted and cuirassed bust of Emperor Justinian I, portrayed in imperial military dress with elaborate detail. In his right hand the emperor holds a globus cruciger, symbolising Christian dominion over the world, while his left arm supports a large round shield bearing a horseman motif in the field. The effigy is rendered in the frontal hieratic style characteristic of early Byzantine coinage, with the legend disposed around the bust within the coin's periphery. |
