Obverse description Frontal bust of Emperor Justinian I, helmeted and cuirassed, facing the viewer directly in the hieratic Byzantine imperial style. The emperor wears a crested helmet adorned with pendilia and a diadem, and is clad in elaborate military dress with detailed paludamentum. In his right hand he holds a globus cruciger, and his left hand grasps a shield. The legend surrounds the bust in the field, and small cross symbols flank the imperial effigy to either side, reinforcing the Christian imperial iconography characteristic of Justinianic coinage.
