The "novih" (new) dinar series was introduced in January 1994 as Yugoslavia's third currency redenomination in under two years — each one peeling zeros off a hyperinflation that peaked at roughly 313 million percent monthly in January 1994, briefly the second-worst hyperinflation ever recorded. The novi dinar itself lasted less than a year before Avramović's currency reform later that same year replaced it with the "super dinar," pegged to the Deutschmark at parity.
Dragoslav Avramović, whose signature appears on this note as governor, was the architect of that subsequent stabilization — unusual to see his name on a note belonging to the crisis he was brought in to end.
