Additional information

Turkey's 2005 currency redenomination — replacing the old lira at a rate of one million to one — prompted the Darphane to issue a series of commemorative pieces in the new unit before most Turks had even handled one in circulation. This coin honors the Stari Most bridge at Mostar, which had been deliberately destroyed by Croat forces in November 1993 and rebuilt, largely through international funding, in time for its reopening in July 2004. The commemorative followed within a year of that reopening.
