Obverse description An intaglio portrait vignette of General Murtala R. Muhammed (1938–1976) in military uniform is positioned to the left of centre over a multicolour guilloche underprint in green, peach, and yellow tones. The denomination ₦20 is printed in each corner, with the value in Arabic script rendered within a dark panel to the right of centre. Two facsimile signatures of the Governor and the Director of Currency Operations run along the lower margin.

Reverse description The Nigerian national coat of arms occupies the right half of the design, with an eagle displayed above two white horses flanking a black shield charged with a Y-shaped river confluence, all above a scroll inscribed UNITY AND FAITH, set within a radiant guilloche surround. To the left, a large circular watermark window is enclosed within an intricate guilloche frame, with the issuer's name arching above it. The denomination ₦20 is repeated in each corner, with the value in full along the lower edge.
