Comments

Mozambique adopted polymer for its lower denominations in the 2011 series partly in response to the brutal attrition rate of paper notes in a tropical economy with high cash-handling volumes and limited banking infrastructure. The 20 Meticais was among the first of the series to appear, printed by Note Printing Australia — the same facility behind many of the foundational polymer issues for developing economies after Australia's own switch in 1988.

The polymer window on this denomination is integrated rather than applied, which distinguishes it from some transitional-era issues that used adhesive film overlays as a cost compromise.
