Obverse description The coat of arms of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg occupies the central field, depicting a fortified white castle with three towers on a red shield, supported on either side by rampant lions facing inward. Above the shield rises an elaborate closed helmet surmounted by a decorative fan-shaped plume. The whole achievement rests on foliate scrollwork at the base. The circular legend 'FREIE UND HANSESTADT HAMBURG' arcs along the upper periphery in raised Latin letters, and the mint mark 'J' appears in the lower field below the coat of arms.
