| Obverse description | The obverse features the state arms of the German Democratic Republic at center — a hammer and compass encircled by a wreath of grain — rendered in fine relief against a flat field. The date 1984 is divided to either side of the arms, with the mint mark 'A' (Berlin) placed centrally below. The large denomination numeral '20' and the word 'MARK' appear in bold relief in the lower field, flanked by two five-pointed stars.
