| Additional information |
Heydar Aliyev, father of the current president Ilham Aliyev, ruled Soviet Azerbaijan from 1969 and returned to power as independent Azerbaijan's third president in 1993, dying in office in 2003. His posthumous presence on state coinage is less a commemorative impulse than an ongoing political project — his image and name saturate Azerbaijani public life in a manner that has drawn consistent comment from outside observers. The Central Bank has issued multiple Heydar Aliyev gold pieces across different years, making KM#106 one entry in a deliberate, continuing series rather than a standalone tribute.
