| Obverse description | Central field features the emblem of Azerbaijan — an eight-pointed star enclosing a flame motif within a circular border, set against a radiating geometric background pattern. A wreath of oak leaves and wheat ears adorns the lower portion of the emblem. The arc legend 'AZƏRBAYCAN RESPUBLİKASI' (Republic of Azerbaijan) runs along the upper rim. Heydar Aliyev, father of the current president Ilham Aliyev, ruled Soviet Azerbaijan from 1969 and returned to power as independent Azerbaijan's third president in 1993, dying in office in 2003. His posthumous presence on state coinage is less a commemorative impulse than an ongoing political project — his image and name saturate Azerbaijani public life in a manner that has drawn consistent comment from outside observers.
