| Additional information |
Lesotho became an independent kingdom on October 4, 1966, having been the British protectorate of Basutoland since 1884. This gold issue was part of the inaugural coinage series authorized by the newly established Central Bank, struck to mark independence rather than for general circulation. Moshoeshoe II, the issuing monarch, was twice deposed — first in 1990, then again in 1995 — making early regal issues like this one documents of a reign that proved anything but stable.
The KM#Pn9 designation places this piece in pattern territory, a detail that substantially affects rarity assessments.
