The 20 Litas note of 1997 belongs to the second series of restored Lithuanian currency, introduced after independence was re-established in 1990 and the litas reintroduced in 1993 to replace the transitional talonas. Giesecke & Devrient in Leipzig handled production — a logical choice given the firm's long relationship with Baltic state issuers during the post-Soviet reconstruction of monetary infrastructure.

Engraver J. Tolvaišis was one of the Lithuanian artists involved in building a distinctly national visual identity for the series, working domestically on design while production moved to Germany.
