Reverse description An incuse square frames the design, with the ethnic inscription ΣΥΡΑ arranged in the four quarters of the square, one letter per quarter. At the centre of the incuse square, within a small circular incuse, appears a female head facing left, identified as Arethusa or a nymph, adorned with a necklace, rendered in delicate relief. The incuse technique, combining a recessed square with a countersunk central circle, is characteristic of early Sicilian coinage influenced by Pythagorean metrology and the die-cutters of the Dionysian mint.
