Obverse description The Maltese national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a quartered shield charged with the George Cross and a representation of the fortifications of Valletta, supported on either side by two seahorses rampant. The shield is surmounted by a mural crown. Below the shield, a scroll bears the national motto VIRTUTE ET CONSTANTIA. The legend MALTA appears in large letters along the lower rim.
