Malta's 1973 gold issues were part of the republic's first commemorative coinage program following independence from Britain in 1964 and the declaration of a republic in December 1974 — making this piece technically a transitional issue, struck under the authority of the Central Bank established just the prior year. The Dolphin Fountain series drew on Maltese architectural heritage at a moment when the new government was actively constructing a national cultural identity distinct from British colonial iconography.
