| Additional information |
San Marino issues coins annually in themed series, and 1988 fell within a period when the republic was producing collector-focused lire denominations with little expectation of serious circulation — the Italian lira's dominance in everyday transactions on the micro-state's territory made indigenous coinage largely ceremonial by this decade. The aluminium bronze alloy used here was the same introduced for Italian 20 lire pieces in 1957, a deliberate compatibility choice given the monetary union between the two states.
