| Reverse description | The reverse displays a dynamic, sculptural depiction of a pole vaulter at the moment of clearance, the athlete's body arched dramatically over the horizontal crossbar, rendered in high relief against a plain field. The vaulting pole is shown engaged against the planting box at lower left, with the upright standards of the bar visible beneath the athlete. The composition fills the coin face with bold athleticism, executed in the distinctive artistic style of sculptor Venanzo Crocetti. The engraver's signature CROCETTI appears along the lower rim. |

San Marino issued a commemorative series tied to the 1980 Moscow Olympics despite the fact that San Marino, like the United States and West Germany, joined the boycott and sent no athletes to the Games. The coins were struck regardless — Olympic imagery sold, politics aside.
