The "Xiongnu" issue is part of Turkey's ongoing "Turkic World" series, which the Darphane launched to assert a cultural and historical continuum stretching from the Central Asian steppe confederacies to the modern Turkish state. The Xiongnu themselves remain historically contentious — their ethnic and linguistic affiliation is still debated, and claiming them as Turkic ancestors is a position held by some scholars and firmly rejected by others.
The series sells primarily to the commemorative collector market; 20 Lira face value on a 31g silver coin was nominal fiction from the day of issue.
