The World Humanitarian Summit was held in Istanbul in May 2016 — the first such UN summit ever convened — bringing together heads of state and aid organizations to address the deteriorating global response to refugee crises and armed conflict. Turkey's position as host was politically charged: the country was simultaneously managing one of the largest refugee populations on earth, primarily Syrian, and was less than two months from a failed military coup that would reshape the government entirely.
The Turkish State Mint issued this coin in the immediate lead-up to that summit.
