The 2011 Winter Universiade was held in Erzurum, Turkey — the first time the games had been hosted in the country. Erzurum's Palandöken slopes had long served as a serious training ground for Turkish alpine athletes, and the city's bid was partly a political push to develop winter sports infrastructure in eastern Anatolia. Turkey issued a commemorative series tied to the event, of which this skiing piece is one.
Collector uptake on Turkish commemorative bimetallics from this period has been modest, keeping secondary market prices close to issue price for most examples in this series.
