Turkey hosted the 2011 Winter Universiade in Erzurum, the first time the games had been held in the country. Erzurum's Palandöken slopes, already a competitive alpine venue, provided the primary skiing venue. This bronze issue was part of a broader commemorative series the Darphane released to mark the occasion — several denominations and subjects were struck, with skiing among the featured disciplines.
