Additional information

Turkey's Constitutional Court was established in 1962, just two years after the military coup that overthrew the Menderes government — a government whose prime minister was subsequently hanged. The court was created specifically to prevent future executive overreach, though it has since been the subject of its own constitutional controversies, including a 2008 case in which it narrowly avoided dissolving the ruling AKP party by a single vote.
