The Battle of Sarikamish, fought in the winter of 1914–15, ended in catastrophe for the Ottoman Third Army. Enver Pasha's insistence on a Napoleonic encirclement strategy in sub-zero Caucasian conditions — against the advice of his German advisors — resulted in the destruction of roughly 90,000 men, the majority to frostbite and starvation rather than Russian fire. The Darphane has issued numerous commemorative lira pieces marking Ottoman military history, and this silver falls within that ongoing series.
