Afife Jale was the first Muslim Turkish woman to perform professionally on stage, breaking a prohibition that had confined theatrical roles to non-Muslim women and men in female disguise. Her 1919 debut in Istanbul caused enough controversy that she was briefly arrested. The Turkish State Mint has issued a long-running series of commemorative silver coins honoring figures from Turkish cultural history, and Jale entered that program nearly a century after her stage career began.
