Admiral Umur Bey of Aydın — properly Umur ibn Savcı — was among the most aggressive naval commanders of the fourteenth-century Aegean, leading his fleet out of Smyrna against Latin crusader shipping with enough consistency that Pope Clement VI organized a dedicated crusade specifically to neutralize him. The Smyrna Crusades of the 1340s succeeded in taking the harbor fort, effectively ending his access to the sea. He died at the siege in 1348, still attempting to retake the port.
This coin is part of Turkey's long-running series honoring figures from the Anatolian beyliks — the post-Mongol principalities that preceded Ottoman consolidation.
