Bulgaria's in-house printing facility, established within the Bulgarian National Bank itself, has produced the country's circulating notes since 2001 — an arrangement that keeps security printing under direct state control and removes reliance on foreign contractors. The hybrid substrate used here was a deliberate shift from pure cotton paper, intended to extend note lifespan in circulation, where the 20 Leva denomination turns over frequently enough to justify the added production cost.
P#121 is a relatively long-running issue with few documented varieties. The watermark remains the primary listed security feature, modest by the standards of contemporary European issues.
